4 days in London: what to visit, free museums & much more

by - Saturday, July 20, 2019

I start writing this post in a cool summer evening with Fufi, my cat, but honestly, I have no idea when I will finish it! 😂 I already know that this post will be suuuper long, but I want to give you all the important information to fully enjoy a long weekend in London.

Portobello Road

How do I get to London?

I booked the hotel and the plane well in advance and saved a lot. I left Venice Mestre and flew with Ryanair. With less than €90 each we bought round-trip tickets together with our luggage to Stansted airport. The airport is a bit outside London, but getting to the center is really easy. You can take the train and buy tickets directly on-site or online. We decided to take the bus for only £9. It takes about 1 hour and a half, but you have the chance to see all the typical houses and English towns.

Io ho prenotato l'hotel e l'aereo in largo anticipo e ho potuto risparmiare tantissimo.

What's the Oyster card? How does it work?

Before this trip, I found hundreds of websites about the subway, but often there are many conflicting facts. Don't be afraid to ask, there are lots of information points where people are extremely friendly and provide you with all the information you need. I already knew the Oyster card but I asked more info on how it works. If you stay a few days this is definitely the best solution because it allows you to save money on a single journey. You buy the card the first time for just £ 5 and then top it up whenever you need it. At the end of your holiday, go to the machines in the stations and withdraw all the money you have inside, including the initial £ 5 of the card!

St. James Park

The must-have places to visit:

This was my second time in London and I wanted to visit all the famous places to absolutely see, but also decide to walk around the city and discover corners without a clear destination. In fact, walking to the subway on the day my boyfriend and I had to go to the Harry Potter Studio we found ourselves in China Town.

China Town

  • Portobello Road and Notting Hill
  • Big Ben and the House of Parliament
  • London Eye
  • Hyde and St. James Park
  • Buckingham Palace
  • Westminster Abbey
  • China Town
  • Oxford Street (Primark!)
  • Piccadilly Circus
  • Carnaby Street
  • Trafalgar Square
  • Kensington Palace

Surely there are so many other things to visit that we have seen, but I think these are the main ones! Let me know in the comments if I forgot something 😊

Free museums? Yes, please!

Yes, you read that right. Most museums in London are free! We decided to visit the British Museum and the Natural History Museum. Both deserve to be visited because even the architecture of the two museums is something sensational. As long as they are free, I was expecting a great crowd. Instead, zero! Maybe because we went on a Monday, obviously it was busy but everything is perfectly organized.

Natural History Museum

I will surely have forgotten something, so if you have any suggestions or want to know more about London let me know in the comments! I'm curious to know what secret places you have visited.
