Glycolic acid: The Ordinary vs Pixi

by - Saturday, March 07, 2020

I have to admit, I bought some products simply because of curiosity. Between blogs, social networks, and videos, you continue to see the same products and everyone loves them. So, driven by the desire to test, I purchased Pixi's Glow Tonic. And after finishing it, I fell in love with glycolic acid and bought another one from The Ordinary. But what is it? And what benefits does it bring?

E quali benefici porta?

Glycolic acid: what is it and how it works?

Glycolic acid is an acid that is part of the alpha-hydroxy acids and has an exfoliating function. Thanks to its properties it makes the complexion luminous by removing any impurities and smoothing the skin. As it's a chemical exfoliation (and not mechanical as the scrub is) it helps to renew the skin to have it cleaner in depth.

Do not worry if it's an acid, this word often scares. It's absolutely not harmful to the skin and will not spoil it. I advise you since it's an intense peeling to use it only twice a week and to avoid using it during the summer.

The Ordinary vs Pixi

After trying the Pixi tonic and falling in love with it, I decided to try another one, especially less expensive. In fact, the Glow Tonic costs €23.95 and the Ordinary tonic costs only €8.70! In addition to the price, the main difference is that The Ordinay tonic is slightly more aggressive because it has 7% of glycolic acid, compared to Pixi which contains only 5% of it.

I personally didn't notice any difference and found them both delicate on the skin. I was a bit afraid to buy The Ordinary one thinking it was too intense for my ultra-sensitive skin, but it's fantastic.

Glow Tonic is definitely more fragrant than The Ordinary which has a slightly more chemical smell. But for the price it definitely has, it is my favorite.

And you? Have you tried one of these two products? What do you think of glycolic acid? Let me know in the comments.

  1. It is interesting to learn about glycolic acid. I'm not too scared of acids, they can help your skin if anything. There is a big price difference between the two products. It's interesting to see how the brand itself already makes a big difference. I haven't tried these products before but thought it's interesting. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Glycolic acid sounds like one of the best to use on skin though it is also advised to be used minimally if there is sensitivity to the skin.I haven't tried these products before but it's interesting to read about them. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hello:)
thank you for your lovely pot. I, too purchased The Ordinary one in the past but found it too harsh for the skin (skin felt brittle and angry after it) I still have it and will try to now use it only 1-2 a week based on your recommendation as I overdid it. I now try to not use really much products so I only use a probiotic moisturaiser (I have very acne prone skin) which is working wonders and only sometimes I feel like my skin is more dull as it is not renewing as fast as it used to and the acid should be perfect for this!

    Thank you.

    1. Hey Nathalie! The Ordinary acid is, in fact, more intense than the Pixi one. Yes, try to use it less and let me know if it doesn't irritate your skin 😚
