If you've been following me for a while, you know very well how much I care about the environment. In my daily life, I always try to buy products without polluting ingredients, products not tested on animals, and above all try to buy reusable products. Over time I managed to change many of my habits and when it comes to beauty I switched to the bamboo toothbrush and bamboo washable make-up remover pads. Now it's time to change my menstrual habits too. Let's see how to be more sustainable together.
Se mi seguite da un po' di tempo sapete benissimo quanto io ci tenga all'ambiente. Nella mia vita quotidiana cerco sempre di acquistare prodotti senza ingredienti che inquinino, prodotti non testati sugli animali e soprattutto cercare di acquistare prodotti riutilizzabili. Con il tempo sono riuscita a cambiare molte mie abitudini e quando si parla di beauty sono passata allo spazzolino in bamboo e a dischetti struccanti lavabili in bamboo. Ora è tempo di cambiare anche le mie abitudini durante il ciclo mestruale. Vediamo come essere più sostenibili insieme.
Your impact on the planet
Let's start with some data to make you understand the importance of this issue. On average, a woman uses 11,000 to 16,000 sanitary pads during her life. Estimating about 200kg of waste. Furthermore, the purchase cost of tampons, pads, and panty liners can be around €70 per year. Think about the cost you have to bear throughout your life. Not to mention that tampons are still not considered a basic necessity (?!). We managed to have a VAT change from 22% to 10% but the road is still long here in Italy.
Partiamo da alcuni dati per farvi capire l'importanza di questo tema. In media una donna utilizza dagli 11 mila ai 16 mila assorbenti nel corso della sua vita. Stimando circa 200kg di rifiuti. Inoltre, il costo di acquisto di assorbenti esterni, tampax, salvaslip si può aggirare intorno ai 70€ all'anno. Pensate al costo che dovete sostenere durante tutta la vostra vita. Senza contare che gli assorbenti sono ancora non vengono considerati un bene di prima necessità (?!). Siamo riusciti ad avere un passaggio dell'iva dal 22% al 10% ma la strada è ancora lunga.
My experience with FlowCup*
The benefits of using a menstrual cup are many: economic savings, you no longer produce waste and moreover, tampons can often be annoying and irritate the skin. So I'm really very happy I made this change. For me, the experience was extremely positive. First of all, you need to sterilize the cup. You can do it in a saucepan and bring the water to a boil or you can use the handy bag that you find with your FlowCup and sterilize everything in the microwave (which I don't have so I went for the first option).
It goes to trial and error. Don't worry! The only important thing is 1. don't rush 2. be comfortable with your body. I share with you the manual of my FlowCup but it can be useful with any other menstrual cup. The insertion was super easy, just get in a comfortable position and relax the muscles. Once I didn't insert it correctly but you notice it right away. For example, it pressed on the bladder and it was quite annoying, you need to place it deep in order to not feel it. To remove it I had some technical problems, I admit. A tip? DO. NOT. PULL. You simply need to take it from the lowest part and gently squeeze it. Just a few tries and you can become a pro in a couple of days.
I benefici di usare una coppetta mestruale sono molteplici: risparmio economico, non produci più rifiuti e inoltre spesso gli assorbenti esterni possono essere fastidiosi e irritare la pelle. Quindi sono davvero molto contenta di aver fatto questo cambiamento. Per me l'esperienza è stata estremamente positiva. Prima di tutto dovete sterilizzare la coppetta. Potete farlo in un pentolino e portare l'acqua ad ebollizione oppure potete utilizzare il comodo sacchetto che trovate insieme alla vostra FlowCup e sterilizzare il tutto in microonde (che non ho quindi sono andata per la prima opzione).
Si va a tentativi ed errori. Non vi preoccupate! L'unica cosa importante è 1. non avere fretta 2. essere a proprio agio con il proprio corpo. Vi lascio il manuale della mia FlowCup ma può esservi utile con qualsiasi altra coppetta mestruale. L'inserimento è stato semplicissimo, basta mettersi in una posizione comoda e rilassare i muscoli. Mi è capitato di non inserirla correttamente ma ve ne accorgete subito. Ad esempio a me schiacciava sulla vescica ed era abbastanza fastidioso, dovete posizionarla in fondo per non sentirla. Per toglierla ho avuto qualche problema tecnico, lo ammetto. Un consiglio a caldo? NON. TIRARE. Va semplicemente presa dalla parte più bassa e schiacciata delicatamente. Basta qualche tentativo e potete diventare dei pro in pochissimi giorni.
